Getting from one place to the next is a crucial part of our lives every day. Many times we don't have to think about the process of navigation because we are familiar with the trip or, more often, because there are plenty of great wayfinding signs along the way to make sure you are on the right track. Because this can be such a subtle process, sometimes it is easy to overlook Directional Signs in our own businesses! Thanks to a few great tips from your friends at MBS, you won't have anything to worry about.

Wayfinding Signage

"Wayfinding" refers to all of the ways that people orient themselves to their surroundings and navigate from place to place. This process is particularly difficult when we are new to a location, but with many of the large and complex buildings in today's world, it can be easy to get lost even if you are familiar with your surroundings. Knowing this, it is important for business owners to be sure that their customers never find themselves confused about where they are or where they are going.

Wayfinding Signage

Make the proccess clear, consistent, and simple.

Your audience shouldn't have to think about the information they see. It should be understood in a quick glance.

Avoid cluttered signs.

The more content you put on a sign, the more difficult it is to get the information that is important.

For wayfinding systems, these rules suggest a couple of things. Most importantly, don't include more information than is necessary. Generally, this means the name of the location and the direction it is. Any more information than this can become distracting from the sign's goal. This is especially obvious when you have signs pointing to multiple different locations.

Be Consistent

Choose the best design for your system and be stick to it! This will make it easier than ever for your audience to know where they are at and where they are going at all times.

Don't Forget Typeface

Another uncommon consideration that should be made is in the area of typeface. When designing your signs, consider the style of font for best readability. Generally, the most recommended font-style is a sans-serif font. You will almost always want to steer clear of cursive or "ornate" fonts because they are much more difficult to read easily at a distance. Be sure to visualize the distance you want the sign to be visible from and size your fonts accordingly. A Wayfinding Sign may look great up close, but it isn't much use if it can't be read from farther away.

Use Destination Signage

The most important, and often overlooked, part of a great Wayfinding Signage System is to have well labeled and easy to spot identification signs for your destinations. You can have the best Directional Signage in the world, but it will be no good if your audience doesn't know that they have arrived at their destination. We recommend at least having a Wall Sign outside the door and/or a Desktop Sign to clearly mark points of interest for your customers.

Not only do these signs make it easier for people to find you, but they can also be the first point of contact between you and your audience. Use this as an opportunity to define your company as a high quality brand by using high quality signs.
